English Language and Literature Department

The Department of English Language and Literature at Princess Alia University College continues to contribute to the development of the college in particular and Al-Balqa Applied University in general as a prestigious academic institution at the local and regional levels. The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the most essential departments in the college, as it is the destination of many new female students.
The Department of English Language and Literature offers two academic programs: a BA in English Language and Literature and an intermediate diploma in translation.

Bachelor's Degree in English Language and Literature

The Bachelor Program in English Language and Literature at Princess Alia University College/Balqa Applied University offers several compulsory and elective courses that address several topics in literature, linguistics, translation, and teaching methods, totaling (132) credit hours.

Intermediate Diploma in Translation

The Intermediate Diploma in Translation Program is a specialized program that provides female students who aspire to become qualified translators with the necessary foundation and educational experience. The program provides materials in language and translation of a theoretical and practical nature at a rate of (72) credit hours, which includes field training. The program consists of linguistic courses such as text analysis, semantics, pragmatics, and comparative linguistics. It also consists of specialized courses in translation, such as audio-visual translation, technical translation, creative translation, translation using computers, and others.

Preparing specialists who possess different skills in English language, literature, and translation and qualifying them to meet the market's needs.

  • Enhancing students’ linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing
  • Providing students with essential linguistic, literary, and translation knowledge
  • providing students with reading and analyzing literary texts skills based on multiple literary theories.
  • Enhancing students’ abilities to employ linguistic theories in analyzing texts
  • Gaining proficiency in creative literary writing.
  • Translating texts from Arabic to English and vice versa.
  • Expressing, debating, and arguing using semantics and pragmatics theories.
  • Respecting and accepting other opinions and respect for cultural differences.
  • Applying psycholinguistics theories in the fields of language acquisition and teaching.

  • Applying psycholinguistics theories in the fields of language acquisition and teaching
  • Contributing to the development of society.

PILO4 Employing linguistic knowledge properly in communication so that they can interact with others in different formal and informal daily-life situations using the proper variety.
PILO5 Reading and analysing different literary texts intellectually and critically and distinguishing literary genres.
PILO6 Employing research methods and up-to-date information technology in writing research papers.
Competences PILO7 Gaining cultural transparency enables the students to respect cultural differences and appreciate cultural diversity and its impact on cultural and literary genres.
PILO8 Developing the required competence that equips the students with the natural use of the language in the labour market and all other social situations.
PILO9 Develop critical and analytical thinking to sharpen the student's independent thinking and analysis ability.

  • The department’s faculty members have published research papers in peer-reviewed international journals indexed in SCOPUS and Web of Science.
  • Participation of faculty members in local, regional, and international conferences.
  • Launching an intermediate diploma program in translation.
  • Appointing two faculty members with doctoral degrees in translation from prestigious international English-speaking universities.

Department Aspirations

  • Updating the bachelor’s plan in the English language to be compatible with the strategic plan and vision of the university for the next four years.
  • Updating the intermediate diploma in translation plan to be compatible with the strategic plan for the next four years and the vision of Al-Balqa Applied University.
  • Developing the translation diploma program to become a translation and interpretation diploma or a bachelor’s degree in translation.
  • Launching a master’s program in the English language
