Pricing
  • Online Classes: $1,000 USD per Fall/Spring/Summer/Winter sessions
  • In-Person Classes: $1,500 USD per fall or winter session

Course Description

The Arabic Readings course enhances students’ understanding of literary works in Modern Standard Arabic.
It explores literature as a medium for human expression, encompassing emotions, thoughts, and concerns through various styles such as prose, rhymed prose, and metered poetry. Emphasizing literature’s role in articulating complex ideas, the course draws from fields like literature, linguistics, philosophy, and sciences. Students read, translate, and analyze classical and contemporary Arabic texts, gaining insights into the latest research trends in Arabic literature and literary anthropology.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:
  • Improve reading fluency, speed, and comprehension of Arabic texts.
  • Enhance vocabulary and understanding of common phrases
  • Improve pronunciation and literacy skills.
  • Understand advanced sentence structures and grammar.
  • Participate effectively in group discussions, expressing viewpoints.
  • Critically analyze primary and secondary sources.
  • Contextualize and utilize classical and modern Arabic texts.

Course Components

  • Reading and Analysis: Reading, translating, and analyzing extracts from classical and contemporary Arabic texts (15-20 pages) from linguistic and analytical perspectives.
  • Literary Trends: Understanding the latest research in Arabic literature and literary anthropology.
  • Discussion and Participation: Engaging in group discussions to improve comprehension and fluency.
  • Assignments and Tasks: Weekly reading assignments, word research, translation drafts, and other tasks.

Weekly Schedule

Weeks 1-2: Introduction to Arabic literary styles, initial reading, and analysis.
Weeks 3-4: Advanced grammatical structures, discussions on literary trends, group activities.
Weeks 5-6: Continued reading and analysis, focus on literary images, symbols, and rhetorical forms.
Weeks 7-8: Mid-term projects and presentations, in-depth analysis of primary and secondary sources.
Weeks 9-10: Advanced vocabulary building, contextual studies of classical and modern texts
Weeks 11-12: Final projects, comprehensive review, and presentations.

Evaluation:

Participation: 20%
Assignments: 30%
Midterm Exam: 20%
Final Exam: 30%
