- Internship and volunteering
Many students come to BAULC with goals that extend beyond linguistic proficiency, aiming to enhance their academic and professional development. Their time in Jordan offers an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the language and culture while gaining practical experience by working with various organizations. Internships and volunteer positions help students build stronger relationships with Jordanians, establish future career connections, practice their language skills, and gain hands-on experience in their chosen fields. Many of our students pursue internships while completing their Arabic courses with us.
At BAULC, we view volunteering opportunities and internships as an integral part of the learning experience in Jordan. We strive to facilitate connections and are continuously expanding our network and the types of opportunities available to students.
Before the start of each term, students in our core programs are introduced to organizations that regularly consider internship applicants. Students are also welcome to ask BAULC staff to connect them with organizations of their interest. To date, our students have completed internships and volunteer opportunities at local and international organizations in fields such as professional development, mass media, water and environment, gender studies, NGOs, and refugee issues, among others.
Additionally, BAULC offers a Supervised Internship Program, where students undertake full-time internships at their chosen organizations while learning Arabic part-time at the BAULC Institute. In this program, BAULC coordinates with organizations to place students in their desired locations. Host organizations receive a stipend to ensure accountability and equitable compensation for supervising interns. However, these paid internship spots are competitive.
Ultimately, internships and volunteer positions are agreements between the employer and the student. Some organizations have competitive internships with strict stipulations, while others are more welcoming to students regardless of their experience or time constraints. Although BAULC cannot guarantee any student their desired internship, we are committed to facilitating connections and providing the resources students need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
- Conversation Pairs
At BAULC, we offer a Language Exchange Partners program designed to enhance international students’ conversational skills by pairing them with native Arabic speakers. This service provides a unique and effective way for students to practice their language skills in a natural, informal setting while also gaining cultural insights.
- Program Structure
Matching Process: Each student is carefully matched with a native Arabic speaker based on language proficiency levels, interests, and goals. This personalized pairing ensures that both partners can benefit from the exchange.
Scheduled Sessions: Regularly scheduled meetings are arranged to provide consistent practice. These sessions can be held in person or virtually, depending on the participants’ preferences and availability.
Balanced Exchange: The program encourages a balanced exchange where both partners spend equal time speaking in Arabic and the student’s native language. This mutual practice helps improve fluency and comprehension for both participants.
- Benefits
Improved Language Skills: Constant communication with native speakers helps students improve their pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversational fluency in Arabic.
Cultural Understanding: Engaging with native speakers offers students a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, traditions, and everyday life in Arabic-speaking communities.
Networking Opportunities: Communicating with native speakers can open up networking opportunities and foster lasting friendships, enriching the overall learning experience.
Confidence Building: Practicing with native speakers in a supportive environment helps students build confidence in their language abilities.
- Support and Resources
Orientation Sessions: At the beginning of the program, orientation sessions are held to guide students on how to make the most of their language exchange partnerships. Tips on effective communication, cultural norms, and goal setting are provided.
Ongoing Support: BAULC offers ongoing support to both students and their language exchange partners. This includes check-ins to ensure the partnership is productive and addressing any issues that may arise.
Additional Resources: Access to supplementary materials such as conversation topics, vocabulary lists, and cultural guides is provided to enhance the learning experience.
