Beginner level
This level deals with some functional topics of real-life situations such as family information, place of residence, daily-life activities, food and drink, greeting and other topics. The vocabulary of this level has been divided into three categories: basic, additional and supportive as occur in the text. Students also study some communicative grammatical structures on the basis of participation and active interactions including and not limited to: addressing questions, negation, signal nouns, exclamation, third person female pronouns of present tense, object, imperative tenses, pronouns as suffixes, number and prepositions.
This level also focuses on Arabic sounds since they are the keys to correct reading and writing and according to their occurrence in three ways: listening, differentiation and production where they are displayed from A to Z in three kinds of drills:
- Repetition of some words included in the dialogues.
- Drills on micro-dyads.
- Recitation of group of holy verses.
After introducing the Arabic acoustic ‘sounds” which are believed to make up some difficulty for students, other more specific sounds are also offered such as ‘tanween’ (double n), stress, voiced and voiceless ‘L’ and The distinction between long and short vowels. This level focuses on listening through extensive use of the functional texts and dialogues. Drills take into account the importance of listening comprehension, variation of listening texts and smooth sequence of these texts. Similarly, training students on speaking relies on dialogues texts where drills and exercises appeared in various ways including:
- Exercises on Turn taking exchanges (dialogues).
- Exercises on filling-in gabs of dialogues.
- Exercises on description of pictures.
- Exercises on communication.
As for the writing skills in this level, students are trained on automatic writing initially where the focus is on writing all Arabic letters independently before being trained on writing letters and long vowels within words. The writing fonts taught in this level is limited the Arabic standard known as ‘Naskh’ which is equivalent to Arabic Typesetting. After students’ acquisition of writing the letters and vowels they are trained on directive writing within the limits they have learned. Writing skills learning occurs in various forms in this level such as: composition of words and expressions, writing words under pictures, ordering words to form sentences, completing sentences, filling in gabs and dictation of selected paragraphs from the material they study. Reading is taught through dialogue texts which are varied and gradual in terms of topics and difficulty level. For example, students should be able to read words, sentences and paragraphs followed by answering comprehensive questions
