English Language Department

The Department of English Language and Literature was established in the fall semester of the academic year 2012-2013. The department offers a four-year accredited bachelor’s degree program in English Language and Literature.
This program fosters students' knowledge of the English Language and literature and develops their language competence and critical thinking skills. It also helps students master the English Language and to fully appreciate the role of literature in culture and society. The program consists of three components:
1. Advanced language skills that offer courses on the basic skills as well as translation.
2. Linguistics which examines English language as a science and offers courses on linguistics, phonetics, and sociolinguistics.
3. Literature which explores literary genres such as novel and drama, Western theories, and American and English Literature.

These components come together to offer the students a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the English language, its history and literature. In addition, they acquaint students with major patterns in Western literature, with particular emphasis on English, thereby refining their aesthetic sense and broadening their intellectual horizons. The teaching plan of the B.A. program has been reviewed and updated with courses that keep pace with new emerging developments in language, linguistics, and literature. Language courses in the 2016 plan are enhanced by different courses that focus on basic language skills, linguistics in all its branches, English and American literature of all genres and ages, and translation. There are 18 faculty members in the department who are engaged in a variety of tasks, including teaching and academic supervision of students’ academic progress and research.

Vision

Ever since its inception in 2012, the Department of English Language and Literature has proved that sound planning, dedication and uniqueness are the best instruments for facing the challenges of this ever changing world. Thus, the Department is fully committed to helping students develop linguistic and cultural fluency in literatures in English as well as competence in core and advanced critical thinking, analysis, communication, and research. Our efforts are directed at producing graduates who will contribute to the cultural, commercial, and intellectual welfare of their home country, and who will foster cultural exchange and understanding regionally and globally. Our Department also seeks to assist students to gain an even greater level of distinction, confidence, experience, and marketability. In addition, Our Department enhances students' ability to utilize their knowledge, skills, and competencies in solving problems and in expanding their intellectual, social, and cultural horizons. Moreover, our Department develops in students flexibility and openness of mind, sustaining in them a renewed knowledge and critical appreciation of the literature of the past and other cultural forms. The Department of English is fully committed to providing quality education to its students and pursuing relentless efforts to keep abreast with the most updating developments in the realm of human knowledge and endeavor.

Mission

The department seeks excellence in teaching and research. To do so, the department’s faculty members are committed to provide students with solid knowledge and skills that foster the development of their critical thinking and analysis and innovation.

Objectives

Our objectives are to:
  • To raise the students' competency level in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This is achieved through the specific language courses required of every student during the first two years of study.
  • To provide students with a broad grounding in English language skills and grammar, translation, linguistics, English literature and research methodologies as a platform for a variety of professional careers.
  • To assist students in developing critical thinking, power of observation, analytical skills.
  • To give the students firm grounding in the English literary canon and hone his/her critical and aesthetic abilities.
  • To increase the students' understanding and appreciation of the literary, rhetorical and pragmatic uses of language
  • To familiarize the students with the major theories and trends in linguistics, and the applications of linguistic principles.
  • To assist the students to conduct serious research in the areas of English language and literature.
  • To assist students to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
