Mohammad Abusamak, M.D., was a fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology, Retina and Vitreous Surgery Program, an AUPO FCC certified program, here at Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Abusamak was the fellow from July 1, 1997 through June 30, 1999. At that time, he successfully completed the program and was in good standing throughout his two years here. The Henry Ford Retina Fellowship Program is a comprehensive medical and surgical fellowship which includes all aspects of the specialty. This is a two year comprehensive training program which provided the highest possible level of clinical education regarding the diagnosis, treatment and management of surgical and medical diseases involving the retina and vitreous.
Dr. Abusamak worked closely with faculty in the clinic and operating room throughout his training and basically learned the most up-to-date care utilizing the most recent results of clinical trials.
Dr. Abusamak began his training in the operating room on day one of his fellowship and was provided increasing surgical responsibility over his two years of training. He gained extensive experience in scleral buckling, vitrectomy, management of ocular trauma, complex retinal detachments and a wide variety of surgical cases.
Typically, a fellow in the Retina Fellowship Program has the opportunity to perform at least 300 primary retinal surgeries, 500 retinal lasers, more than 500 intravitreal injections and photodynamic therapy treatment. The patient population seen in clinic is diverse. Surgeries are performed within three HFH hospital facilities. Dr. Abusamak participated in regularly scheduled departmental meetings and conferences, including weekly Grand Rounds. He was involved in quarterly Retina Journal Clubs as well as holding IVFA/Imagining conferences for the residents. He also participated in resident and medical student teaching activities as his schedule allowed.
