Background- The success of the construction projects are influenced by the factor of time, cost and quality along with sustainable development. The project activities are to be managed throughout building construction process, so as to perform activities efficiently to achieve predefined goals. In this context, Supply Chain (SC) relationship in construction projects emphasised overall operational efficiency to govern activities in integration of socio-economic and environmental management. The way of managing supply chain in construction projects influenced sustainability at the highest extent.
Aim and Objectives- Research aim is to examining the ways to manage SC relationships to ensure sustainable construction projects. Research objectives, in context of the aim, involved conducting of literature review to find ?best practice? SCs that should be managed to ensure sustainability, cross-case analysis of the four case studies of the UK construction companies and to suggest ways to improve SC relationships to meet sustainability.
Research Methodology- Secondary methodology was used to gather data about way of managing SC relationship for sustainability. Qualitative data collection under secondary methodology was undertaken by using case study method and literature survey method. Both these methods help in accessing comprehensive knowledge of supply chain, supply chains in construction projects and supply chains of construction project influence on sustainability. Interpretivism philosophy was applied to explore the phenomenon of supply chain through processed data collection using inductive approach.
Research Questions- First question is, ?How should SC relationships be managed in Construction Projects and what is its significance for sustainability?? Second question is, ?What are the challenges and obstacles in managing SC relationship for a sustainable construction project??
Findings and Results- From the review of cases, it has been found and analysed that supply chain relationship followed in the construction projects are efficiently aligned with environmental norms to manage natural resources usage and depletion of the environment or nature that affect well-being. The challenge in getting sustainable resources is the challenge faced by companies in construction projects to ensure sustainability. The supplies from the local suppliers should be preferred by the contractors to ensure sustainability in terms of low transportation costs and carbon emission.
